A convenience store till has to scan fast, price right and check ages, with a queue at the door and thousands of lines on tight margins. Switch&Save EPOS is set up for exactly that: small barcode tiles eight to a row, Challenge 25 checks that ask for the date of birth, lottery, tobacco and vape rules, and price-marked packs and deposit items built in.
Off-licences and mini-marts get the same set-up. It is the same software as our retail EPOS system; if you also sell newspapers and magazines on sale-or-return, see our newsagent EPOS.

From £349 + VAT upfront plus a monthly service plan, on a 12-month minimum term. See EPOS pricing · Compare the two packages · Book a free demo
What does a convenience store EPOS system do?
It keeps a busy counter moving and handles the rules:
- Fast checkout: scan, tap a small tile or search, then take card, cash or a mix.
- Age checks: alcohol, tobacco, vapes and lottery ask for an age check with the date of birth, and refusals are logged.
- Pricing rules: price-marked packs keep their PMP price on the product, and HFSS volume offers stay within the law.
- Stock: stock takes, wastage, recalls, purchase orders and goods in.
- Reports: sales by department, VAT summary, age-restricted sales and Z read, ready to run.
Switch&Save EPOS features for convenience stores and off-licences
- Challenge 25 age checks: Age-restricted items ask for a check with the date of birth; refusals are logged.
- Lottery, tobacco and vapes: Age rules on every product, and banned items such as disposable vapes are blocked.
- Price-marked packs: The PMP price is kept on the product, and HFSS volume offers stay within the law.
- Fast barcode till: Small tiles with barcodes; a new barcode comes with its name and usual price.
- Deposit-return ready: Deposit items and their deposit are marked on each product.
- Instant product recalls: Raise a recall and the till stops selling it straight away.
- Card payments built in: DNA Payments, Teya and Dojo terminals: the amount goes straight to the card machine.
- Analytics on every sale: Sales, margin, best sellers and busy times for any period, against last year.
Challenge 25, tobacco and vapes
When an age-restricted item is scanned, the till asks for an age check with the date of birth, and every refusal is logged on the compliance register. Banned items, such as disposable vapes, are blocked at the till.
A till prompt supports your Challenge 25 policy; staff training and a clear refusal routine are still yours. Our EPOS checklist for UK age verification sets out what to check.
Price-marked packs, HFSS offers and deposit return
The PMP price is kept on the product. HFSS volume offers, on food high in fat, sugar or salt, stay within the law. Deposit items and their deposit are marked on each product, ready for deposit return.
A barcode the till has never sold? It offers to add it there and then, and the shared product library fills in the name and usual price for you to check.
Wholesaler or symbol-group EPOS, or your own till?
Some wholesalers and symbol groups offer a till with a supply deal. Before you sign, ask:
| Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| How long is the minimum term? | It decides how easily you can leave. Ours is 12 months, then monthly rolling. |
| Is there a minimum purchase commitment? | The till’s price may depend on how much stock you buy. |
| Who owns the hardware? | If you leave, you may have to give it back. With Switch&Save EPOS, it’s yours. |
Card machines for convenience stores
Switch&Save EPOS has DNA Payments, Teya and Dojo terminals built in: the amount goes straight to the card machine and is never keyed twice. Card processing fees are separate, so compare them with our guide to which card machines have the lowest fees for convenience stores.

What the monthly Cloud & Care plan covers
The monthly fee is a service plan, not a payment for the hardware, which is yours. It covers:
- Cloud: sales, products and reports sync to the web portal, so you can see your reports and manage your tills from anywhere.
- Automatic cloud backup of your products, sales and settings.
- Software updates: new features, security updates and UK rule changes such as VAT, installed automatically.
- UK support: remote support Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 5:30pm, by phone, WhatsApp and email.
- Card machine as set out for your package, and set-up help: we help load your products and train your team, as agreed in your order.
Key terms: 12-month minimum term · No change-of-mind returns · Card processing fees separate · Business customers only. Read the terms and the refund and cancellation policy before you order.
Convenience store EPOS: frequently asked questions
Does it help with Challenge 25?
Yes. Alcohol, tobacco, vapes and lottery ask for an age check with the date of birth, and every refusal is logged on the compliance register.
What happens with a barcode I’ve never sold?
The till offers to add it there and then. The shared product library fills in the name and usual price for you to check.
Can I bring my products from my old till?
Yes. Import products, offers, customers, suppliers, users and stock from Excel or CSV, or straight from eight other till systems.
Which card machines work with it?
DNA Payments, Teya and Dojo terminals are built in, so the amount goes to the card machine and is never keyed twice.
Can I have more than one till?
Yes. Add extra tills in the same shop; each keeps selling if the link to the main till drops and catches up afterwards.
Is it made for UK shops?
Yes: UK VAT and VAT return, UK shop time on every report, and UK rules such as Challenge 25 age checks, price-marked packs and HFSS offers.
Is there a minimum term?
Yes, 12 months on both packages. You can’t cancel for convenience during the term: ending early means an early termination charge based on the monthly fees left. After that the plan runs monthly and you can end it with 30 days’ written notice. Cancelling a Direct Debit or card payment does not end the agreement.
Can I choose my card provider?
With the Upfront Package, yes: DNA Payments, Teya or Dojo, all built into Switch&Save EPOS. The Complete Package comes with a card machine included, subject to approval. Card processing fees are separate and quoted by the provider.
